As Dame Edna would say; Hello, Possums!

youtube credit

O.k., well it seems we have a possum running around the backyard at night. We have heard him in the roof (actually it sounds like he is playing ball at the moment), but late at night when everyone is in bed, this is what I hear...creepy isn't it.

For our international friends, Brushtail Possums are nocturnal marsupials, about the size of a cat, and very common. They live in trees, but often are found living in the roof or shed.

I remember when I was in high school a possum was in the tree above us and wee'd on my head, we had dancing straight after..even though I washed it out, my dancing partners were not impressed..hahaha

They are pests in New Zealand (introduced in 1837) and they use their fur to make socks and jumpers. Better than possum pie :)

They are very cute, but don't they make a super creepy and loud sound!

bye, T

They do look cute, but I suppose they must be a bit of a pest! Only see them in zoos over here!

When I was 17 I spent a year in Australia. I stayed for a while in a place called Moira..just up from Perth...I lived with a family as a live in nanny and looked after two small boys. There were possums living in the roof of the house and they made a hell of a racket at night and frightened the flippin life out of me!! you bought back memories xx

Sorry darling, if you hear one there a plenty more..or so my brother tells me!!! The brother who had to lend us a possum cage last year when we had the critters in our very urban garden! They would make a hell of a thump as they lept out of a tree in the front garden to then scamper across the roof & climb in to a tree out the other side. At first we just caught the cats in the cage..just one where the door shut on it, but after Kaitiaki (must have the touch) came & set it we managed to catch the possums too. No socks or jerseys though! x
